In most cases the operating speed of a notebook PC is slower than a desktop PC and in order to get the most out of your machine you have to maintain it in peak performance condition. Consider a few of the things that can affect your notebook’s operating ability, such as too many programs running at the same time, too many windows open at once or how the files are arranged on the hard drive.
While each of these things can slow the system down, if they occur at the same time, the speed can dramatically be reduce to a point of being frustrating. If there are several programs that start up each time you boot your computer, go through the list and determine which ones are rarely uses. You can go into your start up menu and delete these programs so that aren’t running in the background every time you fire up the computer. They can always be started from the start menu if needed.
Virtually every machine has a program for defragmenting the hard drive. This groups program files together making them easier for your computer to find them and get them loaded and ready to use quicker. When you run this program it will show you how much space can be saved by defragmenting and usually offers an option to defrag the system or to leave alone for the time being.
Remember that most hard drives are partitioned for different uses, often defined by the operating system, and when running a defrag program it is only going to work on the partition contain the user files. A separate partition is established for back up files and recovery files and probability will never need attention.
Many people keep everything they own on their computer from music and video files to emails that can be years old. The more files held on your hard drive, the more time it will take for the system to find one you’re looking for and load it for use. Do not be afraid of the delete key. By organizing important documents into separate file folders on your hard drive it make them easier to access and still allow you to delete several of the unneeded files on your computer.
However, simply deleting a file will not totally remove it from your hard drive. If you think back to the last time you hit the delete key it may have asked if you’re sure you want to delete the file and send it to the recycle bin. Over time, all the deleted files can create an impressive load in your recycle bin. The advantage is that if you selected to delete a file and need it later, it can be restored to its original home on your computer. The bad news is it still take up space on your computer. Emptying the recycle bin occasionally can help keep your system running up to speed.
