Learn How To Clean Your Cooling Vents For Proper Running Functions

When your computer is on and running, there are several heat sinks installed that help dissipate heat from several different components on the system’s main printed circuit board. Fans have been installed to help keep air circulating throughout the interior of the computer to prevent these components from overheating and breaking down. When some of them get too hot they can melt and your computer will never run right again.
The simplest way to make sure that cool, clean air continues to be available for these heat sinks is to keep the vents in the computer case free of dust and dirt. No matter how clean the environment may appear, there is always dust floating around the room, ready to be sucked into the vents on your computer’s case. Those who have pets in the house know how quickly dog and cat hair can accumulate and if the animals roam around your computer system, their hair is being sucked into the vents as well.
Once the vents begin to become clogged with dust and other airborne particles, it starts to close off the airflow and the fans can’t do their job of keeping the inside of your machine cool. If the fans don’t burn out first, the heat sinks can overheat and cause major problems with your computer.
To eliminate this problem, keeping the vents clear of anything that could block them needs to be a regular routine. Using the cans of compressed air to blow the dust away is also going to force some of that dust into your machine where it can get into any of the drive mechanisms and cause more problems. In case you haven’t figured it out, dust is one of your computer’s worst enemies, right behind water and three-year-olds.
There are small vacuum cleaners on the market, made for electronic equipment that can pull all the dust and pet hair from the cooling vents, allowing them to properly circulate air throughout the computer’s interior. Using a larger vacuum is possible, but you have to be careful not to damage the case. Never use an upright vacuum cleaner unless it has a detachable hose to which an attachment can be applied for cleaning corners. If you use the vacuum method, there is no reason to use a brush to sweep the vents clear.
It may be a good idea to turn the computer off before turning the vacuum on to prevent any loose dust from being drawn into the cooling fan. With the system on the only air flowing will from inside the computer out to the vacuum hose, carrying all the loose dust and dirt with it. If the system hasn’t been cleaned for a long time, it may be good to remove the CPU access panel and lightly brush any accumulated dust and dirt from inside the machine to keep it clean.
