If you’re the type that has to have the latest gadgets and gizmos and have never met a new operating system you didn’t like, then you are most likely looking forward to installing the new Windows Vista operating system on your laptop.
With past versions of Windows operating systems, installing a new version was pretty straight forward, in that you either bought an upgrade versions or the full version to install on a cleared hard drive. With Windows Vista, there are a few differences in the process. To install Vista, to get a clean copy of the operating system, you must first make sure your laptop is capable of running Windows Vista.
Your system will need a processor speed of a minimum of 800 MHz, ideally one GHz as well as 512 MB of RAM with an ideal RAM of one GB. The system must also be DirectX 9 capable. For the best graphics resolution, the graphics cars is recommended to have at least 128 MB of RAM for 1920 x 1200 viewing or 512 MB for 2560 x 1600. At least 15 GB of free space will be needed on your hard drive and your machine will need a DVD-ROM drive for installation.
Once you have determined you have the necessary hardware to create a Vista-capable environment, go ahead and by the program. Before starting the installation, make sure all other programs are closed, including those in your system tray that may be running in the background. Make sure you have an active internet connection and insert the first CD required for installation.
Only certain versions of Windows are capable of being upgraded to Vista and if your operating system is not on the list, you will receive the message that says the upgrade has been disabled. If your current operating system is on the list, you will be asked if you want to install the program. Choosing yes will start the installation.
If you know your computer has a compatible version of Windows the error may have been caused by several things. The space in the partition housing the operating system may be too small to hold the upgraded operating system or the partition may use a FAT 32 or FAT 16 partition, which is incompatible with Windows Vista. You can convert the FAT files to an NTFS files system in Windows XP.
If you plan to perform a clean installation of Windows Vista, that is not upgrading from a previous version, but installing it from scratch, you must realize that any personal data, including program files will be erased during the installation. Printer drivers, additional software and personal information will have to be re-installed on the computer following a Windows Vista clean install.
