Whenever your computer is hooked up with the internet, it is an open invitation to everyone else on the internet to invade your space as well as your privacy. Broadband, or always on, connections leave your system open for receiving all types of programs that you may not even be aware are on your system. Not only do they lurk around the system gathering information, they can slow down the system.
A virus is written by an’er-do-well, usually in hopes of doing harm to your computer. By embedding files they can do everything from erasing you hard drive to sending itself to everyone in your contact list, making you look like the individual who sent a devastating virus to your friends and family. Some may be written to disable your ability to log onto an antivirus website, through its self-preservation instincts.
Adware and spyware are typically not vicious programs attempting to do bodily harm to your machine. Rather, they are scavengers, seeking food for their owners about the type of information you search for online as well as your buying habits. Unfortunately, they may be advertised as a means to make you web browsing experience more beneficial, the bottom line is they invade your privacy and use up space on your computer. Additionally, they enter your home without knocking and use your computer without your permission.
There are numerous programs to help ward off these injurious and pesky spies through antivirus software, SPAM filters and adware killers. Many times simply visiting a web site will cause a cookie to be placed on your hard drive. Not the kind you eat, but the kind that helps that web site load faster the next time you pay it a visit. While it may seem like a nice gesture on their part, it also tracks what you did, or didn’t, buy from them and what other pages on their site you visited. This only helps that company determine what type of SPAM you may be interested in receiving without complaining.
Spyware, on the other hand, can be ruthless as it tracks your movement around the internet. Everywhere you go and everything you do can be logged. In addition, while most people get upset to think that “Big Brother” is watching, it is usually a company seeking data for advertising purposes that use these programs. SPAM filters catch many of the typical subject lines and ID’s being used, but some still slip through.
If you use an antivirus program, a SPAM blocker and a adware/spyware blocker, it should be the type that offers automatic updates. With new versions arriving on the scene every day, if your program is not kept up to date, the newer programs can find their way into your system.
